KEY VISIONS

Collaborative Partnership with Superintendent

My Beliefs

  • The board needs to create the conditions, provide the support, and enable the superintendent to do what we have asked of him

  • The board is concerned with the “WHAT” (ex: “What are the primary challenges of the district and what resources can be rounded up to meet them?”) and the superintendent is concerned with the “HOW” (ex: “How can we the administration solve this issue and how are resources dispersed”)

  • “The role of the school board member today has to be one of leadership working in tandem with the superintendent to make sure that the public’s interests are served by the public schools.  They do that by engaging and linking to the community.  The board’s role is not to box in the superintendent, but work with him and find the right solutions, ask the right questions, and focus on the right issues. The board needs to constantly push the system and ask the questions.  It’s governance, not management.”  Joe Villani - deputy executive director of the National School Boards Association

My Ideas

  • Create standards and plans for two way communication with the board and the superintendent, using collaborative technology to build trust and partnerships

  • Develop a weekly electronic "Friday Update" email from the superintendent to the board highlighting major events and issues addressed that week

  • Ensure that the roles and responsibilities of the superintendent and the board are well defined and transparent to create the most productive and efficient working relationship
